Black Ball Maritime Society
Whangarei Maritime Festival was initiated by Black Ball Yacht Club - a group of local and international cruisers who aim to give back to the Northland community through education, fundraising and support of a sustainable maritime industry.
At Black Ball Yacht Club, we believe in nurturing the next generation of sailors and maritime enthusiasts.
The main function of the yacht club is to raise money for a scholarship fund which encourages young people to get involved in the marine trades. In recent years the fund has partnered with the Spirit of New Zealand, Kamo High School, NorthTec and the R.Tucker Thompson. In 2023 the BBYC reorganized itself into the Black Ball Maritime Society to reflect its larger activities, establish itself as a registered non-profit, increase its managerial transparency and to increase its efforts to reflect a broader community base. The Society is the official operator of the festival, with any excess proceeds going to the BBYC Scholarship Fund.
David Irvin the Commodore of the Black Ball Yacht Club presented Jo Lynch from the R Tucker Thompson with a check for $2500. This generous contribution is part of our support from the Maritime Festival, aimed at sending youth on unforgettable week-long voyages.
It's heartwarming to know that our donation will help young individuals embark on adventurous journeys, discover the sea's beauty and build lifelong memories.
Thank you to everyone who contributes to making these experiences possible for our youth, and thank you to the R. Tucker Thompson for their outstanding work in fostering a love for the sea.
